EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES

New technologies will be available in the near future, other than those previously announced such as the CISCO AVVID project. Newer advancements include wireless broadband and Long Reach Ethernet (LRE). Looking at both of these new solutions, you can just imagine the changes it would bring to the traditional market place for networking services.

LRE, which can be viewed on the CISCO web site could change on-site cable infrastructure. Utilising DSL technology, but within the LAN, could mark the beginning of a new approach to LAN networking. While the speed may drop from 100M over category 5 type cabling, most Users do not require more than 10M to the desktop, there are exceptions, but a large number of LAN upgrades happen due to miss-configured duplex and bottlenecks elsewhere. LRE is designed to be used with internet access and wireless LAN access - watch out for this one.
